Troopers from Polk County arrested 32-year-old Alejandro Cancel-Montes for driving down the wrong way on Interstate 4. Cancel-Montes was charged with DUI, driving without a license, no insurance, no headlights and driving in the wrong direction.
At approximately 3 a.m. on Monday, highway patrol from Polk County responded to a report that a 4-door Toyota was moving slowly along the westbound lane of I-4 near State Road 559. When authorities caught up to the vehicle, the Toyota made a U-turn and started driving east while still in the westbound lanes and without having its headlights activated.
The highway patrol sped ahead of the Toyota and then forced the driver to pull over by the inside shoulder.
According to a witness that called 911, if the troopers didn’t show up when they did, the witness believes there’s a good chance that the driver as well as others could have seriously been injured.
“We never seen the car coming head on to us because it had no headlights,” he said, “and it was dark and it was on I-4. And the minute we got into our right lane the car flew right by us in the middle lane.”
After Cancel-Montes was arrested, he refused to take a breathalyzer. He was later transported to the Polk County Jail.
